Two of my photographs of Coney Island are included in Half the Sky – Street Photography from Women, a newly-published photography book featuring the work of 98 women street photographers from around the world. I’m in excellent company. Half the Sky was published by Tokyo-based ephemere. – a gallery and photo book publisher founded by photographer Anne Murayama.
Here is an excerpt from the book, written by photographer Marci Lindsay, who curated Half the Sky:
“The photographs present different approaches to street photography: from street portraits to unmanipulated reflection to personal investigation of cities around the world, just to name a few. They are as varied as women are.
Street photography documents humanity at a moment in time, but it does more than that. Life in the street is merely a starting point for the construction of a more intimate viewpoint. It is art—coming from and stimulating the imagination—reflecting the artist, whatever their gender, more than the subject.”
If you find yourself in Tokyo be sure to visit ephemere. to take in the latest exhibition at the gallery and to peruse the photography books and zines available.
